Moreover, the screen supports touch response at a rate of 240Hz during gameplay. This means the display can capture your taps and swipes more accurately. If you need the very best Samsung phone, you're much better off with its more powerful, more stylish, and lower-priced successor, the Galaxy S21 Ultra.
We tested the phone more recently and found that it did a much better job with respect to 5G performant. The phone is able to capture 4x optical zoom thanks to the periscoped 48MP telephoto camera. Everything beyond that is artsandcraftssocialclub hybrid, which means a blend of optical and digital crop. Samsung says it is using AI to help reduce the unavoidable shakes in your hands that are obvious at 100x, but I can’t say it does a particularly great job of it.
In ideal lighting scenarios, the S20 Ultra’s main camera picks up great colors and detail in the default 12MP shooting mode, which composes shots through pixel binning on the 108MP sensor. Here, the Ultra shows its improvements in detail capture and dynamic range over the Galaxy S10, proving less likely to blow out highlights, smooth over gradients, and produce overly-warm photos. This was the case with both the main sensor and the 40MP selfie cam, which also showed great improvement over the S10’s selfie game in the same areas. On paper, the camera setup on the Galaxy S20 Ultra is the main draw of this device. This system affords some advantages no other phone can replicate at the same level, but overall camera performance was a mixed bag at launch. To my non-photographer eyes, all of these changes are relatively subtle, and don't push imaging capabilities as far forward as new phone generations did in the past.
With that said, you can’t combine the high pixel count and high refresh rate at the same time unlike some other panels on the market. The Galaxy S20 Ultra is a no-expense-spared, no-holds-barred phone. Samsung set out to outperform every other Android phone on the market.
The iPhone 11 Pro Max’s attempt is also extremely grainy and too warm, with a greenish, sepia-like cast that wasn’t true to the day’s actual conditions. The Galaxy S20 Ultra is available through all major U.S. carriers, including AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon. If you're looking to snap up an S20 Ultra and save, be sure to check out our guide to the best Galaxy S20 deals. Some retailers and blockchainstart carriers are offering goodies, such as gift cards and additional credit toward a new S20 when you trade in your current smartphone. The Galaxy S20 Ultra packs a 5G modem that allows it to connect to both long-range sub-6GHz and millimeter-wave networks on any major U.S. carrier. We recorded upwards of 100Mbps on the former, though speed will be heavily dependent on your service provider.
However, if you aren’t interested in the Note 20 Ultra for whatever reason, the S20 Ultra is still a good investment. It’s unbelievably powerful, lasts for ages on a charge, has a good camera, and will receive software updates for years. It will also continue to be a powerhouse for a long time as 6G isn’t coming down the pipeline any time soon and smartphone processors aren’t making substantial leaps in power next year, either. The new camera system is easily Samsung's best, and battery life is exceptional.
Low light photography, however, is more of a challenge for the S20 Ultra. The iPhone 11 Pro’s shot in this particular face-off is noticeably more detailed than the one captured using Samsung's flagship. The texture in the yellow petals is much clearer in the result from Apple's handset. The S20 Ultra also exhibited jumpy autofocus when shooting video in Bryant Park. As my colleague Mike Prospero moved around the frame, the S20 Ultra demonstrates obvious trouble keeping up; both he and the background shift in and out of focus. Meanwhile, the iPhone 11 Pro Max kept him and the rest of the scene in perfect clarity.
The Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max tied for the 3rd spot on the podium with the base Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S10. Each of these devices had a score of 82, while the Galaxy S20+ topped 81 points. With Music Share, the Galaxy S20 makes it possible to share your paired Bluetooth connection with another device.
Previous Galaxy S flagships were always weakest when capturing Live Focus shallow depth-of-field portraits. However, even with some of the weaknesses noted above, the S20 Ultra has improved in that regard. Apple can still claim the portrait crown, but some of our portrait comparisons put Samsung in a better light.
Battery Life Drain Test - Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra vs Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max vs Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus vs Huawei Mate 30 Pro vs Google Pixel 4 XL - which smartphone has the best battery life? A few camera niggles at launch and breathtaking price that limits mainstream appeal, but still outmuscles just about any other Android phone you care to name. This is the Galaxy S20 Ultra, what Samsung dubs as the phone that's gonna change photography, and which they believe is Ultra enough for you to shell the price of a high-end computer to prove it.
The screen has a variable frame rate that ranges from 1Hz to 120Hz to save battery life. You can manually set it to 60Hz, but the adaptive mode should be just as effective at reducing the refresh rate when possible. For comparison, the Galaxy S22 and S22+ models have 48Hz to 120Hz screens. As I discuss in the battery section below, that difference in minimum refresh rates likely gives the Ultra an advantage. Our review model is the 'basic' tier with 12GB of RAM and 128GB of expandable storage. The S10+ had a mere 60Hz display and both OnePlus and Huawei have brought out devices with 90Hz displays.
